May 20, 2010 UAAC Meeting Minutes

Stephanie Ritrievi (the new UAAC co-chair as of August 2010) substituted for Mary Hasak as co-chair of the meeting.

Registrar's Office - Emily Johnson and Michael Bard

  • Summer enrollment is up by 5% (12,637 students total); fall enrollment is up by .8 % (total 14,651 students)
  • Graduation approvals (for Spring 2010) are due to the Registrar's Office by May 26.  DARS exceptions should be completed by no later than the date of the list's submission.
  • As of spring 2011, DARS will be used as the official graduation audit tool.


Admissions - Janet Muncey

  • About eighteen departments have not yet returned their articulation guides materials (GETTING READY GUIDES), which were due back last month; please return them as quickly as possible.


Financial Aid - no report

Curriculum Administration - no report

DARS/GPS - Richelle Warr

  • 2010-11 roadmaps were due on May 15, and not many have been submitted; please try to get them in by no later than June 1.
  • Numbers:  roadmaps published to date, 63; four of those were published this morning.  Six hundred fifty-five students have created a total of 809 plans using the GPS software.
  • A new version of GPS is expected within couple of weeks from the vendor. The new version will look different when viewed but data feeds in appropriate areas.
  • Both Emily Johnson and Richelle will be gone for a week, June 14-18 for additional training.


Orientation - Michelle Jones

  • Students enrolled for Summer Term who still need orientation should contact the Orientation office by phone (581-7069).
  • Fall reservations for transfer students are tracking with admissions numbers which is up from last year; reservations for first-year students are lower than the admission numbers.
  • Next week's transfer program is full (at least 250 students are expected).   Orientation has requested no walk-ins, but some are nevertheless expected.
  • College coordinators will receive numbers from Michelle as far as indicated majors.


Transfer Student Issues - Terese Pratt

  • Student enrollment numbers at Salt Lake Community College are way up; they are consequently starting to enforce admissions deadlines more strictly.  At some point they will "close the door"  for the term.  Therefore students thinking about taking courses there need to plan ahead, more so than in the past (and in particular, students wanting summer courses should enroll now).

 
Housing and Residential Education - no report

Mandatory Advising Update - Martina Stewart and Jenny Jones

  • The fall advising kickoff event has been rescheduled to September 8; more information will be coming in June.  The kick-off will cover all forms of mandatory.  The planning committee met yesterday and reviewed last year's event evaluations, which evidenced a desire for more information from the student perspective.  Question to those present at today's meeting:  do you get any type of feedback from advisees that could be used for the kickoff?  Mathematics and Mechanical Engineering indicated that they do; other departments/programs are encouraged to contact Martina (mstewart@uc.utah.edu ).


Advisor Education and Development - Vickie Morgan

  • Upcoming trainings:  Advising Basics -- 5/25 and 6/1 (a new two-day format is being tried); RSVP to David Eisen (deisen@uc.utah.edu ).  PeopleSoft - June 16; RSVP to Vickie ( vmorgan@uc.utah.edu ).
  • This year's annual advisors' conference will be held September 21 at the Officers' Club; theme is "Stars Among Us".
  • New advisors wishing to be added to the UAAC listserv should contact Vickie (and college coordinators, please communicate this to new advisors as well).

    
Graduation Guarantee - Libby Oberg

  • Work is moving forward on guidelines for the Colleges of Humanities and Science.

 

New and Continuing Business 

University Professor Course / Update on LEAP/Honors luncheon: 

Liz Taylor announced a new University Professor course, UGS 3800 (Sustainable Medical Design for the Developing World) (information distributed).  This is a two-credit, two-semester class to be offered fall 2010 and spring 2011.  Also planned is a new (international) LEAP course; ten students from the US-Sino Pathway program will be enrolled along with ten American students (information distributed).

Nearly fifty have RSVP'd for the LEAP/Honors informational luncheon on June 9; there is still room for more.

 
UC 1010 course: 

Leslie Park distributed information on this course (Your Path to a Successful Start at the U of U), which was formerly listed as UGS 1010.  This one-credit-hour course will be taught in six sections during fall 2010 (one of the six sections is intensive, meeting on one Friday afternoon/evening and all day the following Saturday; the others meet twice a week during the first half of the semester).  The course is appropriate for all incoming students (not just first-term freshmen).


Staff Council / Staff Day at Bees Game: 

Tracey Arlene announced that the Staff Council is hosting a Salt Lake Bees game on August 11, featuring a group discounted price of $7 per person (the discount code will be announced later in the staff FYI publication).  Everyone is encouraged to come and support this program, which will include a contest for throwing out the opening pitch.  Tickets can be ordered on the Bees website
Staff Council is also sponsoring a Utah Girls' Soccer Match over Homecoming Week.


Returning to the U update: 

Sandy McLelland reported that the Program is starting its third year.  Advisors are thanked for their having referred students to this program.  Brochures were distributed at today's meeting; they will be reprinted soon, and any ideas for updates and/or changes should be passed on to Sandy (smclelland@uc.utah.edu ).  A handout with summary data for the first few years of the program was also distributed.  Noteworthy:  over 500 students have been seen in three years.  Expected graduation for spring 2010 is 22, and 15 for summer, which are the highest totals to date.

The University of Utah does not have a definition of "nontraditional student" as such; the Program advisory board has been looking at formulating one.  Also planned is some type of informational gateway for these students, including such things as scholarships, specific programming, and opportunities for representation on campus.

 
USET: 

Darrell Coleman, from the Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence, distributed information and presented on the Undergraduate Student Experts on Teaching (USET) program.  This program "empowers undergraduates and faculty members as they work together to enhance teaching and learning at the University of Utah", and involves a two-semester paid assistantship program for "undergraduates who aspire to be leaders on campus in the teaching mission, wish to increase connections with faculty in their declared major, or considering a career involving teaching, consulting, or training".

The Program is a partnership between faculty, Undergraduate Studies, and the Center for Teaching and Learning (whose role is support the teaching mission at the University).

The mission, vision, and program components were explained.  It was noted that besides the financial remuneration and the opportunity to work with a faculty member for a year on some type of teaching project, students can gain important leadership, consultation, observational, teaching, and communication skills  
Advisors are asked to please mention the program to those students who have declared their majors and who may be interested in what the program offers.  Ten candidates are being sought for fall 2011, but candidates need to start preparing in fall 2010.  The program manager is Jill Stephenson.


Other: 

Sharon Aiken-Wisniewski noted that there is currently an opening for the Direction for the Exceptional Student Experience.  This internal hire will be a faculty member who will facilitate the President's vision of an exceptional student experience.  The individual will be charged with working with several existing programs (Bennion Center, LEAP, CTLE, etc.) and proposing and implementing new ideas and channels for enhancing and increasing the student experience.
