September 16, 2010 UAAC Meeting Minutes

It was announced that there is an error in the calendar in the published Undergraduate Bulletin: the date on which Spring 2011 registration dates will be available to students in September 27, rather than September 20. The Class Schedule will however be available on September 20.

Registrar's Office - Michael Bard
Total enrollment at this point is 31,171, up 4.8% from last year.

Admissions - Janet Muncey
The Admissions Office is currently evaluating applications for Spring 2011 and beyond.

Financial Aid - no report

Curriculum Administration - Stephanie Ritrievi for Ed Barbanell
Ed is currently visiting colleges and universities who have implemented the appearance of major emphases on their DARS reports.

DARS/GPS - Richelle Warr and Emily Johnson

  • This morning's DARS upgrade went well and appears to be working properly.
  • Work on uSelect is moving forward; it's hoped to have something new to show in November.
  • As of now, 1,184 individuals have created a plan in GPS; 142 roadmaps have been published. In the new version of GPS, a user can search for a particular version of a roadmap.

Graduation Guarantee - no report

Orientation - Trisha Jensen

  • A total of 5,426 students were seen in the orientation programs.
  • Applications for orientation leaders (for next summer's programs) will be available on October 1, and are due back by 4:00pm on October 25.
  • National Student Exchange - applications are now being accepted for 2011-12 (handout).

Transfer Student Issues - no report

Housing and Residential Education - no report

Mandatory Advising Program - Victoria Trujillo and Martina Stewart

  • The my.utah.edu portal is going away as of October 15; students will then be directed to the Campus Information Systems (CIS) portal. Much of what was available in my.utah.edu now appears in CIS. Departments and advisors should update their information materials accordingly.
  • PeopleSoft upgrade is scheduled for October 10; as of October 11, some panels (e.g., service indicators) will look a bit different. Advisors may wish to block off an hour or so to look it over. Updated documentation is being compiled and will be distributed soon.
  • Thanks to those who participated in, and completed the evaluation for, the Mandatory Advising kickoff event on September 8. Reminder: freshman registration holds will be active as of September 27 (the e-mail goes out to them on that day; a copy of it will be posted on the UAAC listserv). The enrollment report indicates about 200 more freshmen this year than last.
  • Second-year advising program: students in this cohort will be notified of the advising requirement on October 8.

Advisor Education and Development - Vickie Morgan

RSVP's for the September 21 advising conference have been strong. This year's conference will highlight our "star" programs and people; the keynote speaker is Amy Bergerson, from the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy. Topics will include distance advising; students in transition; veterans' services; and developmental advising.

New and Continuing Business

Career Services: Pat Reilly from Career Services highlighted, and distributed information on, that office's resources and programs that are geared toward undecided and exploring students (Pat works with this population). These include:

  • Self-assessments through UCareerLink
  • One-on-one appointments
  • ED PS 3960 course
  • Career Fairs (October 5, science and engineering; October 7, humanities, social/behavioral science, and business) included pre-fair workshops
  • Graduate school fair, September 24

Advisors are encouraged to refer students to Pat ( preilly@sa.utah.edu ); e-mail is the easiest way to schedule appointments.

Ambassador Program Scholarships: Jacqueline Fogel followed up on the e-mail that was sent on the UAAC listserv (information and application is available at http://www.ic.utah.edu).
