Special Presentations

  • International Student Orientation by SuHyen Um-Perez, International Student Advisor/Office for Global Engagement
    • Orientation for international students starts August 16th
    • New International Students will be coming to advisors for advising on August 20, 22, 23 from 3-4 pm. Thank you for assisting these students.
    • Kassy Keen, Center for Student Wellness
      • Looking for staff partners to accompany students on Alternative Spring Break 2014
      • Applications are due August 29th

      • Angie Gardner, Math Department
        • Staff will be available to assist students with math placement questions in JWB 221 the week of August 19th M-F from 10-2; and the weeks of August 26 and September 2 on MW from 8:30-5, TTH from 9-5 and F 8:30-4 (note: no advising hours on Sept 2)
        • Angie’s specific hours will be posted on the Math Department website so that students with more involved questions can speak with her

Admissions – Janet Muncey

  • The application for 2014 is now available
  • Admissions is still taking non matric applications for fall until 8/23
  • Articulation Guides are being delivered today and tomorrow. All schools are in one combined booklet.
  • The website is being updated; please check for accuracy and let Janet know if you see any problems

Registrar’s Office – Michael Santarosa

  • Calendar dates are available online and in the Unified Calendar   http://registrar.utah.edu/academic-calendars/index.php
    • 8/13 grades available for summer 2013
    • 8/26 classes start for Fall 2013
    • 9/4 last day to drop
    • 9/9 last day to add and tuition deadline
    • Posted 45% of degrees already; exceptions in DARS were due on 8/14
    • The Graduation Office is very busy, so please email rather than call
    • All course work for summer should be completed now; if not completed, students should reapply to graduate in a future semester
    • Advisors will be receiving a survey about the graduation process on 9/16; please provide feedback so that Graduation Office can adjust operations. This survey stems from the work of Lean and Graduation Task Fork Committee.
    • Registrar’s Office completes 42,000 verification records per year; students can now request verifications on line through CIS (attachment to August Minutes)

Financial Aid – no report

Curriculum Administration – Lyndi Duff

  • Meetings are currently being held to discuss the new catalog
  • In November, Lyndi will be sending out a version of the new catalog asking for your feedback and edits
  • Curriculum.utah.edu has been updated
  • Deadline for changing courses for spring 2014 is 8/30
  • They will not be making changes to programs (ie requirements for majors, major/program descriptions, etc.) during the transition to the new catalog
  • Changes to the catalog for 2014-15 will be due January 25th

DARS/GPS – Richelle Warr

  • Students who started before Fall 2007 and graduate after summer 2013 will need to take an IR course and receive a C- or higher grade in QI courses
  • On 9/20, the automatic waiver in DARS for these requirements will be deleted
  • On 9/20, DARS will also be deleted

Advisor Education and Development – Richelle Warr for Vickie Morgan

  • Advisor Technology Training on DARS and PeopleSoft will be September 3rd. More information will be coming soon.
  • A survey on Ed and Dev went out today; please give feedback
  • On 9/5 from 10:30 to noon in LNCO Lounge there will be a panel on making the most of your NACADA experience; more information coming soon on UAAC listserv

Orientation – Shari Lindsey for Trisha Jensen

  • Reminder about the New Student Welcome with President Pershing on August 24
  • If you run into students who have still not completed an orientation for Fall 2013 please have them call our office immediately so we can get them oriented.
  • Thank you again for a successful summer orientation season.

Transfer Student Issues – no report

Committee and Task Force Reports:

Mandatory Advising Program – Martina Stewart

  • Invitation has been sent for the MAP Kickoff on 9/10, 8-11 am
    • RSVP to David Eisen
    • New First Year Students will be selected on 9/30

Advisor Awards – Martina Stewart

  • UAAC awards committee will become a standing committee of UAAC
  • We will have the same committee as last year, with the addition of advisor award winners
    • That means the committee will continue to have representation from colleges across campus, and include a student affairs non-advising member, UAAC co-chair, UC advisor, and student
    • Term will be 2 years with the possibility of extension
    • Committee will meet in Fall to establish goals for the year, timelines, subcommittees, etc

Marketing and PR for Advising – Sharon for Taunya Dressler

  • Going through tag lines
  • Will bring to the group to decide which ones to use

The Advisor Position – Gina Shipley

  • Committee will meet next week
  • Committee is creating a spreadsheet comparing the advisor position at a variety of schools (PAC 12, USHE, Exemplary Schools). Comparisons will include but is not limited to title, case load, salary information.
  • Deadline for completion of this project is 2 weeks
  • Look forward to a report on this in the near future

Task Force for Graduation Application - Lena May Fraser     

During spring, this task force met for four months. They have compiled their research and recommendations, and this information will be sent out in the near future. This was a great group with some really good ideas. Thank you to all the members who participated.

Continuing and New Business

  • Sarah Rollo on behalf of Steve Hadley – 2013 MAJOR EXPO, 9/25, 10-2 Union Ballroom
    • If you haven’t already RSVP’d for the EXPO, please do so ASAP by emailing Steve Hadley at shadley@uc.utah.edu .
    • If you have any open houses, information sessions, guest lectures or other activities appropriate for exploring students, please email information about these events to to Steve Hadley at shadley@uc.utah.edu . This information will be put on the calendar in the Major Exploration Program website. This is a great advertising opportunity for your events!
  • Writing & Rhetoric Major – Lisa Shaw and Maureen Mathison
    • Major approved by Board of Regents on 7/19
    • Lisa Shaw will be the advisor

  • Music Minors – Maryann Dresher

  • Drawing Minor – Nevon Bruschke
    • New minor effective fall 2013, 24 credit hours. Information was distributed.
  • President’s Welcome – Saturday, August 24 at Kingsbury Hall
    • Please join the welcome!
    • Come before 10:30 to sign in
    • UC will have an advising booth and advisors available until 1:30
  • NACADA Scholarships
    • Next week you will be getting an email about scholarship money available to help with the cost of the NACADA conference
    • If you’d like to apply, you will be need to respond to these questions: What would be your goals in going to the conference? Why should you be selected? What will you bring back to the UU advising community?

Advising Tip of the Month – AP Exams for Fall 2013

The Office of Admissions was able to upload AP test scores for all students who sent scores to the U of U, paid the Admissions Deposit, and attended Orientation. Students were sent a Summary of Transfer Credit to share the results of scores for various tests. These test scores are posted on DARS, too.

Course Offerings for Summer or Fall 2013

  • FCS – Bobbi Davis and Jenny Stout announced that there are still open courses in FCS and provided a handout by topic.
  • ESSF – Shannon Mulder, shannon.mulder@utah.edu 
    • ESSF courses are offered for non-credit; UU employees get 50 percent reduction
    • On campus and off campus options
    • If you would like to see something offered that is not, please contact Shannon Mulder
    • To add second session class after semester starts, students can add through CIS registration process
    • If class is full, the student should contact Shannon Mulder to see if possible to get in
