Presentations

Sharon Aiken-Wisniewski reviewed “Plan to Finish.”   From the University’s Academic Affairs website:

The U is joining with other institutions in the state in the shared agenda to increase four- and six-year baccalaureate graduation rates. The U’s Plan to Finish campaign is tailored to the unique talents and needs of our students, with five components:

  1. The New U Student Experience – expanded opportunities for Utah undergraduates to engage in high-impact learning experiences, such as learning communities and capstone experiences
  2. Academic Planning – resources to build adaptable academic plans from the first days on campus
  3. Advising & Mentoring – access to ongoing advising and mentoring as academic plans change and new opportunities arise
  4. Flexible Scheduling – expanded course opportunities to meet student needs and promote completion of 30 hours per academic year, with new scheduling options, such as more summer courses, more hybrid and online options, and weekend course opportunities
  5. Financial Incentives and Awareness – new scholarships designed to reduce students’ work obligations, increased education about economic consequences of protracted time to baccalaureate degree completion

A Plan to Finish worksheet, included in the new Undergraduate Bulletin, was distributed.

Admissions –Rachana Patel

  • Amanda Tuckett will send out the final draft of the Getting Ready guides next week; it is due back by July 18.
  • Late applications for Fall 2014 are still being accepted, but must be complete (with application, fees, transcripts, etc.) and be accompanied by a petition letter.  The enrollment deposit is still open, with no date currently for its closing.  For students who wish to appeal, the deadline is July 15.
  • The Asia campus application for Fall Semester closes on July 15.

Registrar’s Office – Dallin Cowles and Michael Santarosa

  • Fall 2014 enrollment stands at 19,368 (up about 800 from last year).
  • Dates / deadlines:
  • June 19 (today) – 2nd-half classes begin
  • June 20 – last day to withdraw from semester-length courses
  • June 28 – last day to drop (delete) 2nd-half courses
  • July 2 -  last day to add, elect Credit/No-Credit, or audit 2nd-half courses
  • July 11 – last day to withdraw from 2nd-half courses
    • For Spring 2014, there were 4,400 potential degrees, and 92% did graduate; 177 undergraduates were denied.
    • Registrar’s Office is undergoing an upgrade to its phone system (an e-mail was sent out regarding this); for today and tomorrow, incoming callers will need to use all ten digits when dialing.

Financial Aid – no report

Scholarship Office – Sharon Aiken-Wisniewski (for Tina Redmond and Carol Bergstrom)

  • The Office will begin a series of Brown Bag seminars in July; these are geared toward assisting advisors to learn about scholarship processes.

Curriculum Administration – Lyndi Duff

  • Work is proceeding on the new catalogue, including four-year plans.  Those designated as catalog editors will be asked to review the plans for their areas.
  • August 25 is the deadline to add new courses, or make changes, for Spring 2015.

DARS/GPS – no report

Advisor Education and Development – Steve Hadley

  • The next campuswide inservice is July 10, from 9am – 11am, and will feature ASL inclusion training.  It will be held in the Sill Center large conference room.
  • The Fall Mandatory Advising Program kickoff will be on September 12, and will feature guest speaker Jenny Bloom, from the University of South Carolina, who has done much work in the area of appreciative advising.  The event will include both a light breakfast and lunch.  An e-mail will go out next week.

Orientation – no report

Transfer Student Issues – Terese Pratt

  • Those who are advising at this Saturday’s transfer orientation program are reminded of the community and cohort programs available to this population (e.g., LEAP, BlockU).  We want to make sure that transfer students can find these opportunities.

Committee and Task Force Reports

Mandatory Advising Program – Steve Hadley and Sharon Aiken-Wisniewski (for Martina Stewart)

  • As stated earlier, the fall kickoff will be September 12.
  • Academic Advising Center will be encouraging students who are planning on majoring in a particular area, to go out to the relevant colleges on campus.

Advisor Awards – Shari Lindsey

  • The Committee recently wrapped up an excellent year; thanks to those who served.

Marketing and PR for Advising – Taunya Dressler

  • As reported at last month’s meeting, a student focus group took place in April.  It’s still hoped to do a faculty focus group over the summer, and 10-15 people are desired; advisors who have suggestions for participants should contact Taunya or Sharon.

The Advisor Position – Jessica Taverna

  • As previously reported, there was a positive meeting with Ruth Watkins and Cathy Anderson, and there have been some resources that are being directed at advising.  Colleges who asked for advising positions were encouraged to consider the bridge advising model.
  • The Committee will resume meeting shortly before Fall Semester begins.  It’s desired to keep a successful momentum going.

Continuing and New Business

Major Expo:  Sharon Aiken-Wisniewski (on behalf of Sarah Rollo) said that everything is moving forward for this year’s event; there has been a good response from departments and programs across campus.

Writing and Rhetoric Department and Major:  Lisa Shaw announced that departmental status will be achieved as of July 1 (Department of Writing and Rhetoric Studies).  She distributed a newsletter detailing this change, as well as a list of Spring 2015 upper-division courses to be offered.  This Fall Semester, there will be a section of 1010 offered during the first half-semester, and a section of 2010 offered during the second half; so a student could potentially complete their Writing requirement within  one semester.

Math 1060 Prerequisite Change:  Sharon Aiken-Wisniewski (on behalf of Angie Gardiner) announced that effective Fall 2015, a student must have taken 1050 as a prerequisite to 1060.

FLXU Designation in the Class Schedule:  Sharon Aiken-Wisniewski noted this new course attribute (“FlexU”) which designates course sections that are taught outside “normal” hours (e.g., evening or weekend courses).  Courses can be searched on this attribute.

 

Jency Brown reminded the group that there are no courses that count for both of two Intellectual Exploration areas; rather, some courses can count for one *or* the other.
