Personality Types & Interest Inventories

One way to gather information about yourself, to help you decide on a major or career, is to take either the STRONG Interest Inventory or the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). If you are interested in taking either assessment, you can schedule an appointment with an Academic Advising Center advisor by calling (801) 581-8146.

STRONG Interest Inventory

The STRONG Interest Inventory compares your interests and dislikes to people working in 122 different occupations that are happy working in their occupation.  The basic idea is that if you share similar likes and dislikes with people that enjoy doing their job you might enjoy that job as well. 

The STRONG can:

  • give you a better understanding of your interests
  • help you understand how those interests fit into the world of work 
  • give you some general ideas of careers to explore 

Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) 

The Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is a personality assessment that can help you understand your preferences, non-preferences, and potential strengths and weaknesses. 

The MBTI can help you understand:

  • Where you direct your energy
  • How you gather information
  • How you make decisions
  • How you approach your life 

Knowing your preferences in these areas can be helpful as you explore majors and careers.  The MBTI may also help you identify potential blind spots as you explore.  You may need to make a special effort to include characteristics of your non-preferences as you explore to make sure to include all relevant information in your decision.  It is important to note that your personality “Type” does not put you in a box or tell you what you should and should not do.  It is simply a tool to help you to better understand yourself and your preferences.
