Mary Parker, Associate Vice President for Enrollment Management, reported on (and distributed information regarding) the University’s move to a holistic admissions practice, effective with Fall 2013 freshman entrants. (transfer and international applicants are not affected at this time). Highlights:

  • Effective July 1, the Offices of Student Recruitment and Admissions will merge (to be known as the Office of Admissions). Aretha Minor will serve as the interim director while a national search for a director is conducted. The two physical offices will remain, with the Union Building office becoming the “Welcome Center”. (A list of contact information for the new combined office was distributed.) Departments should update their web pages and links accordingly.
  • The holistic admission process will focus on more than just ACT/SAT and GPA for admission decisions. The assessment of applicants will take into account such factors as depth of academic preparation, personal qualities, and the ability to contribute to a culturally and intellectually diverse learning community. The process will include a new admission application (to go “live” on September 4) and new admission and housing deadlines for students (list distributed). Minimum GPA and ACT/SAT requirements will no longer be published, though these components will continue to play an important role in the evaluation. Test scores must come from the testing agency (rather than just the high school transcript).
  • Rolling admissions will no longer be feasible; all admission decisions will be released simultaneously.
  • First-time freshmen who are admitted will need to reserve their place with a nonrefundable $150 enrollment deposit due by May 1 of the year of enrollment. Students applying after April 1 will be placed on a waiting list and notified of their admission decision after May 1.
  • No admission applications will be accepted after June 1.
  • High school guidance counselors have been notified of the changes.

Admissions – Maren Lythgoe

  • July 15 is the deadline for completion of Fall 2012 undergraduate applications (the application and all transcripts must be received by then). Nonmatriculated applications will be accepted until August 17, as will reactivations (unless they have attended another University since their last U of U attendance, in which case July 15 applies).
  • Residency deadline is July 1; completion deadline is August 1.
  • Janet Muncey will send out a draft copy of the Getting Ready Guides during the week of July 7.

Registrar’s Office – Dallin Cowles, Emily Johnson

  • Enrollment figures:

Summer 2012 – 13,218 (.2% down from last year)

Fall 2012 (as of this morning) -- 19,433 (up 5% from last year)

  • Summer 2012 second-half courses begin today.
  • Deadlines:

June 22 (tomorrow) – last day to withdraw from semester-length courses

June 30 – last day to drop / delete second-half course

July 5 -- last day to add / elect Credit – No Credit / audit second-half courses

  • Graduation application review is now totally finished for Spring Semester (up 175 students from last year at end of semester, though this may be reduced based on students who turn out not to be completely done).
  • For Summer 2012, late application starts on June 25 (the deadline for Fall was June 1).
  • Feedback (positive or negative) is sought on the new graduation clearance report that was rolled out for Spring Semester.

Financial Aid – no report

Curriculum Administration – Ed Barbanell, Lyndi Duff

  • August 25 is the deadline for Spring 2013 curriculum and prerequisite changes.
  • Unified calendar – are advisors and other department staff finding it to be a useful tool? Please send feedback to Ed Barbanell (Edward.barbanell@utah.edu).

DARS/GPS – Richelle Warr, Sharon Aiken-Wisniewski

  • A listing of goals and timelines for the new GPS process proposal was distributed. This has been put together with an eye to making the process work better for departments. One idea is for the encoders to do the building and then collaborate with the departments to ensure that it makes sense for everyone. Richelle asked for feedback as to whether these dates make sense (rwarr@uc.utah.edu).
  • Plans: There are currently 5,776 plans on GPS, coming from 5,195 students.
  • Advisors: please ensure that when you refer student to DARS about something, be very specific about what particular area you’re referring to. If the graphs and charts aren’t matching the “plusses,” let Richelle know.

Advisor Education and Development – Vickie Morgan

  • Advising Basics Workshop -- June 26; RSVP’s will be accepted through tomorrow (advisorevents@uc.utah.edu). The structure of the Advising Basics Workshop will be reviewed this coming year.
  • PeopleSoft training for advisors -- June 27.
  • Annual University advising conference – September 19. Theme: “Reimagining Advising.” Deadline for proposals is August 13.

Orientation – Jency Brown (for Trisha Jensen)

  • There is an undecided overnight orientation currently going on. Orientation thanks everyone for their participation.

Transfer Student Issues – Terese Pratt

  • A group has been working on developing resources for advisor and faculty in applied degree programs at Salt Lake Community College; these degrees will transfer and vocationally-oriented credits will transfer.   Advisors may be seeing these students and should be able to help them to understand how their previous work could apply toward a degree. Students with applied degrees aren’t automatically cleared for General Education requirements (as are students with an Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degree).

Housing and Residential Education – Andrew Kahrs

  • Over 400 students on a wait list have been housed. The wait time from when students apply to when they’re offered a room is now about 45 days. Out-of-state and international students are give priority, to some extent.
  • To line up with some admissions deadlines, some housing deadlines have changed (refer back to Mary’s handout).   Note that the last day to cancel will now be May 1 rather than June 1.

Mandatory Advising Program – Jency Brown for Martina Stewart

  • This year, the MAP kickoff will again become a “freestanding” event (i.e., separate from the advising conference).

New and Continuing Business

Election of New Co-chair: Shari Lindsay was elected as the new UAAC co-chair for 2012-13.

New LEAP Offerings: Carolyn Bliss thanked Vickie Morgan for suggesting and arranging the recent LEAP / Honors roundtable; it is planned to do these regularly. The University has asked LEAP to increase its offerings by 10% each year through 2016; this year, three sections will be added. New this year: 2nd-year first-semester Pre-Nursing LEAP section.

Schedule for Auditions: Mary Ann Dresher distributed information on School of Music performing opportunities and Fall 2012 Audition Dates.
