Advising for Undecided/Exploring Students

Can’t decide on a major? Set on a career but not sure how to get there? Wanting to try out a major and need help in selecting exploratory courses? Major Exploration appointments are a great way to plan your next steps as you explore the academic programs offered at the U.

Newly Admitted Student:
Exploring Majors

Have questions about general education, major exploration, or how your college credits will apply? Speak with an advisor at a Major Exploration Info Session to have your questions answered as you decide on the U and to meet other students who are exploring majors!

Prospective and Returning Students

If you are a prospective student to the University of Utah or a former student looking to return to complete your degree, call our office (801-581-8146) to schedule an academic advising appointment.

Milestone Advising Program:
1st Year

If you are an undecided/exploring student in your first semester, you are required to complete mandatory advising to help select courses and discuss resources for your second semester at the U.

Milestone Advising Program:
2nd Year

If you are an undecided/exploring student in your second year, you are required to complete a mandatory advising appointment to check your progress, discuss involvement opportunities, and select courses for the next semester.

Milestone Advising Program: Undeclared

If you are a student who has completed 60 credit hours or more and have not declared a major, you are required to meet with an academic advisor to explore or declare a major and select classes for the next semester.

Academic Standards: Low List

If your most recent term GPA is below a 2.0, you are on the low list. It is recommended that you meet with an Academic Advisor to discuss strategies for success.

Academic Standards: Warning

If your cumulative GPA is below a 2.0, you are moved to Warning with a hold placed on your account to prevent course registration. You must complete a student success workshop to remove this hold. If this is your second time on Academic Warning, you must meet with an advisor.

Academic Standards: Probation

If you’re already on Academic Warning, and your most recent term GPA is below 2.0, then you will be placed on Probation. A registration hold is placed on your account until you meet with your department advisor AND an Academic Advising Center advisor to discuss strategies for future academic success.

Academic Standards: Suspension

If your cumulative GPA and semester GPA fall below a 2.0 while on Probation, you are subject to Suspension for a minimum of 3 semesters. Students on Suspension can meet with an AAC advisor to discuss opportunities to pursue while on Suspension, as well as plan for a successful return to the U.

Academic Standards: Dismissal

If your cumulative GPA and semester GPA fall below a 2.0 after returning from Suspension, then you are subject to Dismissal from the university.

Late Withdrawal, Academic Renewal, Complex Issues,
