Program Description

Pursue your passion and let your creativity shine through with the music program at the University of Utah. The Bachelor of Arts degree in Music is a liberal arts degree with an emphasis in music. This degree is an ideal choice for students who want to study music as well as another major or minor. Prior to admission to the program, all students must audition on their major instrument or voice. Once admitted, music students complete a variety of music and performance classes. The music curriculum includes classes on music theory, conducting, music history, large ensemble, performance, chamber ensemble performance, keyboard, and private lessons. Students who complete this individualized academic experience will graduate as cultured, well-rounded professionals prepared for a number of careers professional positions.

The Student Experience

An excellent resource for music students is the McKay Music Library, host to recordings, software, and scores and sheet music. If you want to get involved in your department, consider joining the Student Advisory Committee or a performance ensemble. The U’s performance groups include symphonic band, the Utah marching band, choir, jazz, opera, orchestra, and small ensemble formats. ArtsPass gives you free access to the hundreds of arts events that occur on campus each year, your ArtsPass is loaded on your student ID card. Finally, if you want internship opportunities or career options, ArtsForce offers events and workshops to help prepare College of Fine Arts students for life after college. 

Career Opportunities

Students who receive a BA in music are eligible to pursue careers in and outside of music. You can find work in a number of areas. Entrepreneurship students might decide to pursue music-related startup opportunities, music philanthropy, or arts and cultural leadership. Students who have studied music and complete pre-medicine requirements may decide to study medicine. If you decide to attend graduate school, jobs as music therapists, professors, and administrators are also possible.
