Program Description

The Environmental Humanities and Transformative Justice (EHTJ) certificate provides students with humanities tools to create just futures and solve environmental problems. This undergraduate certificate provides an interdisciplinary and justice-oriented focus on environmental issues through which students explore the social and cultural dimensions of environmental crises; synthesize ideas at the intersections of the sciences, the humanities, and our communities; and explore transformative possibilities for the future.

Academic and Career Opportunities

The EHTJ certificate provides students from any major the chance to explore a wide variety of interdisciplinary perspectives on the social dimensions of environmental issues. Coursework equips students with action-oriented leadership, communication, and social advocacy skills. The final certificate capstone course will foster students' work in the community where they can apply, practice, and reflect on those skills in real-world situations.
Students begin choosing three foundational courses across the University then continue to three advanced courses. EHTJ certificate coursework culminates in EHUM 5000, a unique capstone course which spotlights collaborative, community-centered projects and research that apply skills to real-world situations.

The breadth of interdisciplinary knowledge and the skills-based projects will prepare students for various forms of environmental and social engagement, advocacy, and activism. Upon complete of the EHTJ certificate, students will have learned collaboration, critical evaluation, problem-solving, and relationship skills that complement careers across a wide range of fields.
