Program Description

This pair of certificates (Composing Music for Film and Games and Scoring for Film and Games-BMus Composition Emphasis) provides experience with writing music for various media, from films and animations to video games. The two certificates ensure that we have options for students at all levels of previous musical knowledge. The Scoring for Film and Games is intended for students already enrolled in the BMus with an emphasis in Music Composition, while the Composing Music for Film and Games is accessible to students in all other BM emphases and majors with an interest in creating music for visual media. Students will be admitted based on evaluation of their statement of interest and no audition is required. This is a highly interdisciplinary certificate, with course offerings in music, film and media arts, as well as games. All students will complete a final project as a capstone experience.

The Student Experience

Students in this certificate will gain ample hands-on experience with music in a variety of visual media. They will have access to faculty in the School of Music, Film and Media Arts, and Games. Music students will be encouraged to expand their knowledge of different media and technologies, while students from outside the department will be nurtured by music composition faculty, whatever their level of music literacy and experience. All students will complete a capstone experience, applying their skills to a creative project.

Career Opportunities

There are a variety of career opportunities in fields connected to music and sound production. Music students interested in becoming film composers will require the special knowledge of visual media that is provided by this certificate. At the same time, music has a direct impact on a variety of creative fields, from aural content for commercials or instructional videos to the sonic environment of games. This certificate will greatly enhance the ability of students pursuing careers as developers of visual content, whether through games, commercially produced visual media, or the streaming and recorded videos of influencers or online content creators.
