Program Description
The Data Fluency certificate is designed to provide students with exposure (i.e. basic fluency) to the principles, issues, and tools within the field of data science. Starting from a base of only college algebra, and not requiring calculus, this certificate provides familiarity in statistics and programming, as well as skills in data wrangling and data ethics, and the application of these skills in one domain. The specific skills taught through this certificate complement most non-STEM (and even some STEM) majors and looks to make students more fluent in how to make critical analysis of data.
Academic and Career Opportunities
In 2019, Glassdoor reported that the position of a Data Scientist was ranked among the best jobs in America for the fourth year in a row. Since then, the field of Data Science has grown and jobs are in high-demand. Students pursuing this certificate may work in areas that are not explicitly data science, such as digital journalism, psychology, sociology, geography, etc., but these fields are beginning to require more data science skills. Students who pursue this certificate will gain skills with statistical, programming, and ethical data-processing fluency in their specialized domain of knowledge, making them more employable within their respective fields.
