Program Description
The Diplomacy major prepares students to work on some of the most consequential issues of the present. The field of Diplomacy is wide-ranging and interdisciplinary. Wherever competing interests and perspectives collide, the craft of diplomacy is critical. This major combines the study of the structural causes of conflict with the practice of real-world negotiation and consensus-building. It emphasizes technical, cultural, and communicational competencies alike. The program builds on key research strengths from across the University of Utah. It has four focus areas: 1) Tribal Sovereignty and Cultural Heritage; 2) Conflict, Displacement, and Humanitarian Affairs; 3) Health, Climate, and Sustainability; and 4) Science, Technology, and Society.
The Student Experience
Our team of experienced advisors helps guide students all along the way. The program’s core course is an opportunity to meet other students in the major, start friendships, and network with like-minded peers. Every year, the Diplomacy program also helps host an expansive slate of globally-oriented events, including the annual Dolowitz Lecture in Human Rights. These are great for meeting friends, brainstorming about key issues, and networking. Academic enrichment possibilities include internships, collaborative research projects with faculty, and opportunities to publish or present research in diplomacy-related journals and conferences.
Career Opportunities
Graduates of the program are prepared for a wide range of careers across the public and private sectors—both domestically and internationally. They can start their own companies or pursue careers in international business, marketing, account management, or consulting. They can launch into graduate programs in preparation for Foreign Service careers. Diplomacy is also excellent preparation for graduate study to support careers in (for example) law, social work, human resources, higher education, government, or business.
